Canyonlands National Park

A Dry Place Is Not an Empty Place

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you;my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
--Psalm 63:1
Miles of stone. Dry washes. Mesas, arches, and towers. Canyonlands National Park can look harsh and empty at first glance. Like a lot of desert landscapes, it can seem like a place where life barely holds on—beautiful but severe.
The truth is somewhat different.
Cacti bloom. Grasses take root. Lizards scramble across the rock, and birds ride currents in the air. More than that, lichen and other tiny organisms form living crusts across the soil, helping hold moisture, resist erosion, and make a place for other life to grow. What looks barren is anything but.
That matters, because spiritual dryness can feel like emptiness too.
David prayed from a dry and thirsty place. His soul longed for God. His flesh thirsted for Him. The man after God’s own heart understood spiritual dryness. How did he respond? He did not pretend the desert was easy. He did not treat thirst as failure.
He brought it honestly before the Lord.
There are seasons when faith feels dry. Prayer does not come easily. Scripture feels harder to receive. Worship feels routine, empty. In those moments, it is tempting to assume nothing is happening. But dryness is not death.
A thirsty soul is still a living soul.
The danger is not that we feel thirst. The danger is that we stop bringing that thirst to God. Canyonlands reminds us that a dry place is not always an empty place. God can sustain life where we least expect it. He can teach dependence where we wanted ease. He can use the ache of thirst to draw us back to the One who satisfies, and He can cultivate perseverance through the season before the rain.
The desert may be dry, but God is not absent there.
Reflection:Where have you mistaken spiritual dryness for spiritual emptiness?
Prayer:Lord, meet me in the dry places. Teach me not to despise thirst, but to bring it honestly before You. Help me seek You when faith feels quiet and life seems empty, and cultivate perseverance in me through the season before the rain. Amen.
