What Lies Beneath

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. –1 Timothy 4:8-10
Millions of people visit Yellowstone National Park each year to see geysers, hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, waterfalls, wildlife, and mountains. They stand beside Old Faithful. They stare into the brilliant colors of Grand Prismatic Spring. They watch steam rise from the ground and mud bubble like something alive.
But in many ways, those visible wonders are not the real story.
The story is what lies beneath them.
Yellowstone’s hydrothermal features are the visible expression of a vast volcanic system beneath the surface. Heat from below warms groundwater, drives geysers, feeds hot springs, and shapes much of the landscape visitors come to see. People come for the incredible, but they often miss what makes it possible.
The Christian life is often the same way.
We notice integrity, hard work, character, gratitude, and thoughtfulness. We admire people who remain steady under pressure, gentle in conflict, joyful in hardship, and faithful when no one is watching.
But those things do not appear out of nowhere.
The prayer life is hidden. The time in Scripture is hidden. The quiet obedience is hidden. The daily surrender is hidden. The effort, the training it takes to grow, is hidden.
The results are not.
Yellowstone reminds us that what is most important is not always what is most obvious.
The visible wonder often points to a hidden source.
So does a life shaped by Jesus.
Reflection: What hidden habits are shaping the visible parts of your life?
Prayer: Lord, help me see the hidden parts of my life more clearly, and shape what is beneath the surface, so that what others see in me looks more like You. Amen.
