First Light

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

Lamentations 3:22-23

First light has special meaning at Acadia National Park. There, at certain times of the year, Cadillac Mountain becomes the first place in the United States to catch the rays of morning sun.

People take that seriously.

Before sunrise, when the mountain is still quiet, cold, and dark, visitors guided by flashlights and headlamps gather along the summit and face the horizon. They wait there with anticipation for the first hint of dawn, and when the moment arrives, darkness begins to loosen its grip. The sky softens. The waters of the Atlantic take shape below. Islands emerge from shadow. Before long, the sun rises over the ocean and a new day begins.

It is a special moment.

Sunrise has always carried the language of hope. It does not guarantee an easy day. It does not promise that grief will lift, problems will disappear, or every prayer will be answered the way we want. But it does remind us that mercy is still available, change is still possible, and God is still on His throne.

Jeremiah held on to that. Lamentations was written from a place of darkness, devastation, and discomfort, yet he still maintained hope. In the middle of grief and sorrow, Jeremiah called something greater to mind: the steadfast mercy of God had not been exhausted. That was enough for him to keep moving forward.

Faith does not ignore the darkness. It simply refuses to believe that darkness has the final word. A new day is another opportunity to repent, forgive, begin again, take one more step, or receive remember the grace we need for what still lies ahead.

The sun will rise. The world will turn. And the Lord will still be on His throne.

When first light appears over Acadia, it reminds us that God’s faithfulness has carried us into another morning. His mercy is still available, change is still possible, and hope is still reasonable.

Where have you begun to believe that nothing can change? What would it look like to receive today as another opportunity for God’s mercy to meet you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that Your mercy is new every morning. When darkness feels final, remind me that You are still on Your throne. Give me hope to begin again, courage to take the next step, and faith to trust Your mercy for whatever this day may hold. Amen.
