Road's End?

We don’t want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of our affliction that took place in Asia. We were completely overwhelmed—beyond our strength—so that we even despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:8–9

"We've reached the end of the road."

Depending on the context, those words can evoke very different feelings. They can be exciting, or they can feel devastating.

At Road's End in Kings Canyon National Park, they’re usually positive. The name describes your destination. Sort of. Beyond Road’s End, the canyon opens into one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower forty-eight states. Some people stop to enjoy the river. Others shoulder a backpack and disappear down the trail for days. The road ends, but the journey doesn't.

That’s an apt description for a lot of situations in life.

Sometimes we reach the limit of our strength. Sometimes our experience runs out before the problem does. We exhaust our resources, our wisdom, our patience, or our ability to fix what has gone wrong. Those moments often feel like failure because our culture has taught us to keep pushing, keep striving, and keep finding a way.

But limits are not always signs that something has gone wrong.

Paul confessed that he and his companions were burdened beyond their own strength. They had reached the end of what they could carry. Yet that difficult season revealed something they might not have learned any other way: their idea of the end, and God’s idea of the end, are not always the same thing.

Perhaps that is why Road's End is such a fitting name.

The end of the road is not the end of the journey. It is simply the place where the road has fulfilled its purpose. Our gifts, abilities, experience, and determination are gifts from God, and they can carry us a remarkable distance. But they were never meant to carry us everywhere. There comes a point where the pavement ends and dependence is revealed.

Far from being a place of defeat, that may be where the greatest part of the journey finally starts.

Reflection

Where have you reached the end of what your own strength or abilities can carry? How might God be inviting you to trust Him in ways you never had to before?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gifts, abilities, and opportunities You have given me. Help me use them faithfully without depending on them more than I depend on You. When I come to the end of my own strength, remind me that You have not come to the end of Yours. Amen.
